- Besides art, what else do you do?
In addition to my art, I work as an art teacher at a school in Larnaca, while running my own creative inspiration school.
- What are the materials you use and what is your favorite?
Although my work is dominated by black and white element, however, I love experimenting and combining different materials such as threads of different colors, paint, ink, acrylics, oil paints, watercolors and pencil. I find it hard to choose a material because each one serves a different purpose.
- What do you distinguish in your own projects, how would you describe them? (artistic flow, movement)
My work has been described as modern and realistic. Although it has intensely realistic figures, these are not the main objective. In my work I see layers, surfaces that hide or reveal other layers. I like to zoom in and discover abstract pieces.
- At what age have you realized that you wanted to become an artist and in what occasion?
Subconsciously the choice was always inside me, consciously I decided around the age of 17. Several circumstances showed me the way, but decisive role played a teacher of mine in high school.
- Describe the place where you work
My studio has a minimalistic style, with huge windows and I’m surrounded by nature which makes me feel very grateful.
- Who or what influences and inspires you?
I am influenced and inspired by my surroundings, events, relationships, emotions. I am inspired by my students. I am inspired and moved by various artists. I am inspired by the truth.
- What is the first artist who comes to your mind?
There are so many ….! Caravaggio, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Durer, Russ Mills, Jenny Saville, Marina Ambramovic, Alex Kanevsky, Chiharu Shiota …
- What project would you like to have created?
The installation of Chiharu Shiota «The Key in the Hand» presented this year at the Venice Biennale.
- What is beauty to you?
For me, beauty means truth.
- What’s your favorite color;
The white that hides all the colors in it.
Thank you Elena!
